LA Loft ~ Patrick Tighe Architects

The 1400 square foot dwelling is located in an existing warehouse building in downtown Los Angeles. The live-work environment was designed for a creative professional. Two distinct entities are evident in the design. The angular geometry of the faceted stone clad monolith stands in contrast to the free flowing organic elliptical shaped room. Through these two pieces a dialogue...

Science and religion: An openness to discussion
I saw this on a Discovery Magazine blog and immediately thought to post it.
Over the past week, I’ve participated in a question on Quora.com that goes something like this, Can science and religion co-exist? The discussion has been educational and, for the most part, respectful.
For me, such discussions are what what make life interesting.

Music from my past: Guadalcanal Diary
One of the fine bands lost in the brilliant glow of R.E.M., Pylon and the B52s during the white-hot music scene in Athens of the late 1970s and early 1980s was Guadalcanal Diary, a little group out of Marietta, Ga., that later got lumped into that whole movement. Perhaps you’ve heard of ‘em. Most likely, you haven’t.
I saw them a few times back in the 1980s and they blew me...

This cool wallpaper imitates books in such a realistic way, that guests will certainly be tempted to read some of the titles. This is why this design is probably referred to as the genuine fake bookshelf wallpaper. Whether you place two rolls together in order to form a large bookcase, or create two different units, the overall addition looks very interesting and original.

Two Americas as seen from Davos
An interesting window into the discussion at Davos, where the influential and wealthy are hobknobbingAmplify’d from www.economist.com campaigner, central banker or a politician. Yet somehow each year the divisions grow. Ever more of the plutocrats seem to travel by limousine, rather than foot. Geeking out on Joss Whedon
So I started the today off as I usually do. Driving to Santa Fe while listening to a playlist on my iPod.
Today, for some reason, I felt a hankering for music from Joss Whedon shows, which came as a bit of a surprise. This time of year I usually listen to Bad Brains or The Stooges or Public Enemy as a way to put me in the appropriate mood to cover the New Mexico Legislature.
Anyhow, anyone who...

It’s not really there.
When the Sun’s light passes through the Earth’s atmosphere, it gets bent ‘downwards’, in the same way a prism or a glass of water—anything transparent or translucent—bends light. When it nears the horizon, the light is bent for quite a long way. The result is…
Mix Irish punk, Replacements and E-Street band....
A friend pointed Titus Andronicus out to me a week or so ago. Since then I’ve become a fan of The Monitor, their latest release; in particular, this song — Richard II or Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds — which made me want to quaff a Guiness while dancing a jig in a dingy bar somewhere where tattered optimism and hard-luck stories mingle.
O.K.,perhaps...

I’m drinking some Riesling while listening to Kanye West’s “My Beautiful, Dark Twisted Fantasy” and reading “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest” on my Kindle. Sounds relaxing, right? That is, if you go in for Kanye West and Stieg Larsson. But all is not right on this Saturday night. At the back of my mind I’m trying to figure out the meaning of...
